Help – How to read the data
The name search counts the resident population of Switzerland at the end of 2025, by year of birth (STATPOP statistics of the FSO ). Only the first given name counts: every person counts once. Double names with a hyphen such as Anna-Lena count as one name. The FSO leaves out first names mentioned fewer than three times in total, to protect privacy. First names that occur fewer than three times in a year of birth are shown as *. The ranking counts the newborns of one year (BEVNAT statistics of the FSO , from the civil register Infostar) and shows the first 1000 ranks. Names of equal frequency share a rank.
The division into the four language regions is shown here.
About this tool
The tool answers questions about the frequency of first names in Switzerland: how many people born in a year carry a name, and which names parents give their children – for all of Switzerland, by language region and by canton.
It follows the first-name tool that Snowflake Productions GmbH built in 2017 on its own initiative from the data of the FSO, and ran at this address until 2026 (announcement of 13 July 2017 ). This version is a rebuild by Opendata.ch that reads the open data of the FSO directly.
